Procedure:

The first step in creating a drape is to measure from the rod to the length you want your drapes to finish. I need my drapery to finish at 91inches then I  allowed enough to create a hem and a header so I cut my fabric to measure 103 inches.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I have allowed 6 inches for the hem and 6 inches for the header.

After cutting my fabric, the next step is to add my hem. I measured and folded 6 inches up then pressed.
Then I fold the 6 inches in half to create a 3 inch hem then sew.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe top photo shows where I had measured 6inches and the bottom photo is where I folded the 6 inches in half to create my 3 inch hem.

The next step in creating your lined drapery with grommets is to cut out your lining. I want my lining to be shorter than my drapery fabric so I cut it 101 inches in length. Sew  your hem the exact same way in your lining as you have for your drape fabric. Once you have finished with your hems then you can place the fabrics together. To do this, lay your drapery fabric face down on your cutting table then place the drapery lining right side out on top.

As you can see in the photo, place the lining two inches above the finished length of the drapery fabric. Do not sew the hems together. The next step is when these two fabrics come together.

Next step is the hem the sides of your drapery. With the decorative fabric laying face down and the lining face up measure three inches on each side and press. Next, fold each side in half and sew. This will give you a 1 and 1/2 inch side hem on each side.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA This photo shows the 1 and 1/2 inch side hem.

Next step in creating your grommet topped drapery is to measure and so your header.
Always measure several places across the fabric from bottom to  top of your drape because this will ensure that your finished length will be the length you need it to be. I wanted mine to finish at 91 inches so I made sure that about every 6 to 7 inches I would take a measurement and pin.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Since I am adding grommets to the header area I want to make it stiffer so I added crinoline.

Press your header and turn under the unfinished edge and stitch.

The last step in making your draperies is to add the grommets. I started this by measuring from the left side in 3 inches and then every 8 and 1/2 inches I placed another grommet and continued this until I finished with a grommet 3 inches from the right side of my drapery.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIn some cases the fabric may not be a wide as the fabric I chose for my drapes so just use some simply math to figure out the correct placements for your grommets.

Now you know the steps in creating a beautiful grommet drape. Happy sewing!!!
