Let’s decorate a small bolster pillow!
During this blog, I will demonstrate how to make a decorative cover for a bolster pillow form.
SUPPLIES:
You will need approximately 3/4 yards of fabric, foam bolster form, spray adhesive and decorative trim (I used bullion fringe).
PROCEDURE:
The first step in creating this beautiful bolster is to measure the diameter of the bolster form. Our small bolster form is 19 inches around. So the fabric will need to be cut 20 inches in length. The width of the small bolster is 14 inches so I cut the fabric 16 and a half inches in width. I will explain the reason for such an increase in width in a minute.
This photo shows the fabric cut for the length and width of the bolster.
Next cut the end pieces.
To do this, place the form on the fabric standing on its side and trace out an inch wider in width and cut.
Serge around all the pieces you have just cut. There should be three total.
Use the spray adhesive and cover the ends of the bolster form and the backside of the small round disc of fabric you just cut. Add the fabric to the ends of the bolster. Pressing hard with your hands. I use a rubber band to keep these ends in place while the adhesive sets and drys.
Notice where the pins are placed in the fabric, this is where I will sew the bullion fringe onto. Since I cut my fabric 16 and a half inches wide I needed to measure 1 and a fourth inches from each side so the fringe will end up where needed.
Use your zigzag at this point to add the fringe. This just helps add stability. Sewn the fringe onto both sides of the face fabric.
Now, fold your fabric face sides together and stitch down along the edge using a half inch seam allowance.
Turn your tube inside out so that the face is out.
At this point you will have 1 and a fourth inches of fabric on each side that needs to be sewn under. I didn’t make a photo of this step but all you do is turn it under and stitch. This is made easier if you have a sewing machine that has a part that sides off to allow for sleeve hemming which mine does.
At this point you have finished the entire pillow cover so to make the insertion easier place the bolster form inside a plastic bag. I know this step may sound ridiculous but it works great. Once you have the form in the plastic bag, start pulling the tube of fabric over the plastic covered form.
This photo shows what I am talking about.
Once you have the tube completely in place remove the plastic bag.
Now you know how to create a decorative bolster!
Happy sewing till next time.
