For this blog, I used approximately four yards of Terrasol Rainforest Sunset Outdoor fabric plus approximately 16 yards of outdoor piping.

PROCEDURE:

The first step in making these cushions was to determine the size I wanted the cushions to finish. The cushions are being made for a wicker sunroom set. The settee needs a cushion 42″ by 21″ and the side chairs need cushions that measure 20″ by 20″.

First I cut two pieces 43″ by 22″.  Then I cut four pieces 21″ by 21″.

Each cushion piece is needing to have piping added. I cut approximately 16 yards of two inch wide strips of bias fabric to cover the piping.

Sew the strips of bias fabric together to make one continuous strip of fabric which will be used to cover the outdoor piping cord.

Using the zipper foot attachment cover the piping as shown in the photo.

Next add the piping to each of the cushions top and bottom pieces. Notice in the photo, as you come to the corners it works better to clip the edges of the piping to help turn.

For the box sections of the cushions you will need to cut fabric according to the width of the foam. I am using four inch foam for these cushions so I cut my side pieces five inches in width except for the sections for the zippers to be attached. To make the zipper section I cut two (3″) pieces for each cushion.

To make the zipper section, baste stitch the two (3″) sections together and press the basted area down with your fingers.

Now add the zipper face down on the basted area and sew.

Since the utility or coil zippers do not have a stay to make sure the zipper pin does not come off I always make a doubled piece of fabric and sew to each end of the zipper coil as shown in the photo.

Now, sew the zipper section and the side sections together to create the box for the side of the cushion.

The last step is to sew the box section to the top and bottom sections of the cushion.
