Let's make a gathered dust ruffle - Best Fabric Store Blog

During this blog, I will demonstrate how to make a dust ruffle!

SUPPLIES:

You will need fabric and twist pins.

PROCEDURE:

The first step in creating a dust ruffle is to get the mattress dimensions. This mattress measured 80″ long by 60″ wide. To get the yardage needed of sheer fabric you will add (80 + 80+ 60= 220) but since I want to make a gathered dust ruffle and want 2 times the amount my total will be 440 instead of 220. Which will amount to 12.22 yards of fabric.

My mattress height is 15.5″. Since I am using a sheer fabric for my dust ruffle, I want to fold my fabric in half instead of adding a hem.

When using a sheer fabric the best way to get an accurate cut line you will need to pull a thread.

This photo demonstrates pulling the thread. To have no seams in this dust ruffle I pulled the thread vertical the 12.22 yard length.

I want this dust ruffle to end up with a finished measurement of 15.5″ so I needed my cut to be at 36″. This will give me an extra 5 inches to gather and attach to my decking.

If you will look closely at this photo you can see the line where the thread was removed. This is where I will use my scissors and cut.

Once you have cut the fabric then fold in half and pin.

When doing a gathered dust ruffle I like to use fishing line and the zig zag stitch. I use the largest zig zag stitch on my machine. The fishing line is what I use to pull to make gathers. While holding the fishing line, zig zag over the line making sure not to catch the line in the stitches. Run this line the entire length of you folded fabric in my case the entire 12.22 yards.

After you have finished zig zagging tie off the ends of the fishing line so it will not come out.

I am going to use twist pins to stabilize my dust ruffle but I still need a narrow decking material. I ripped ten inch strips of fabric, folded in half, then sewn together. I will add my gathered fabric to this.
