Let’s make an apron!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA [1]   During this blog I will demonstrate how to make an apron.

SUPPLIES:

evanholiday-m [2]  I used 1 and 1/2 yards of the beautiful holiday print “Evan Holiday”.

PROCEDURE:

After choosing a apron pattern (McCall’s 2947), I started by cutting out the three pieces needed for my Christmas apron.

The apron front was cut on the fold. Then the other two pieces (pocket and straps) were cut flat.

First step in sewing the apron was to serge both the top of the apron front and the pocket top. The next step was to turn the top edge of the apron and pocket  down 5/8″ press, pin, then stitch.

Then move to the sides of your apron. Notice I also serged the sides, then pressed 5/8″ seam allowance.

Sorry for the bad photo but this is where I folded the side seam that was pressed 5/8″ in half to have a rolled hem. Press once more, then pin and stitch.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA [11] OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA [12]   After you have turned up a 5/8″ seam allowance around the bottom of the pocket it’s time to add this to your apron front.  To make sure I have the pocket positioned correctly on the apron front, I pressed both the apron and pocket in half. This step helps tremendously. Open your apron front and pocket and align the creases you made by pressing.

Pin your pocket in position and then stitch.

Now it is time to make your ties for the apron. My pattern called for ties or banding cut on the bias.

This is my pile of ties cut 3 and 1/4″ wide.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA [17]  I started these by pressing the ties in half, then half again. This makes sure you have no raw edges.

Fold and press once more.  After you have measured and cut your apron ties make sure to fold and press your ends inside and stitch.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA [19]  Last step in creating your apron it to attach your ties (straps) to the raw edges easing to fit along curves and having ends extending an even amount to form ties.

This photo demonstrates how to pin and stitch down the ties.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA [20]  Now you know how to sew this simple but beautiful apron!!

Happy sewing!
