Let’s recover a gliders cushions! Part 1

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  During this blog I will demonstrate how to recover the glider seat cushion.

Sorry, I don’t have a photo of the actual chair for the before and after but I do have a photo of the cushions.

SUPPLIES:

husktexturebrick-modpiping632-mzipper3beigeslide3beige

For the glider seat I used approximately 1 and a half yards of Husk textured Brick , 5/8 yards of out door piping, 5/8 yards of zipper coil in beige and a slider pull in beige.

PROCEDURE:

The first step in recreating the gliders seat cushion is the remove all the stitching on the existing cushion using a seam ripper. I have a total of six pieces of pattern pieces.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Next, take all the pieces of the cushion and use for pattern pieces.

Lay all the pattern pieces right side down on the backside of the fabric you will be using to recover with. Cut out all the pieces and place darts exactly like the existing patterns have. This step is very important when you start sewing.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Make piping using your zipper foot.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Next prepare your zipper. First step is to baste stitch two pieces together.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Now flatten out the baste stitch and place your zipper face down on the flattened seams. Once again use your zipper foot and stitch.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   I use the utility zipper which Warehousefabricsinc.com sells by the yard and a zipper head. These do not have stops to prevent the zipper head from coming off the coil. To prevent the head from coming off use a piece of fabric as shown in the photo and stitch down across the zipper several times. Do this on both ends of the zipper.

Next, attach the bottom and top of the seat cushion together with the cord in between.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  The next step is to attach the zipper section to one side of the seat cushion. The other side of the zipper will be attached at another time.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  This seat pattern has some darts to show where the side panels will be placed.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Next, take your side panel and place the darts on top of the other and stitch into place. I used a half inch seam allowance while sewing.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  At this point your cushion seat will look like this.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Believe me it took a few minutes to get this step to work in my mind. What you have to do now is to line up your side panel you just attached with the side of the top of the seat cushion and sew face sides together. Now line up the side panel with the bottom of the seat cushion and sew face sides together. Then repeat on the other side panel.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Now it is time to attached the other side of the zipper section.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  The last step is to sew the ends closed as shown in the photo.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Now you know how to recreate a glider seat cushion using the existing pattern.

Next week we will make the gliders back cushion!

Happy sewing until next time!!
