A scrappy Easter basket

A cute little basket – just in time for Easter! And I mean just in time for Easter. I should have done this in advance, but here I was, days before Easter, trying to whip up a homemade Easter basket for my almost-2-year-old.

For this project, you’ll use strips of fabric wrapped around really pudgy piping. Then you’ll coil the whole thing into a basket.

Supplies

1" cotton piping

Paisley Gate / Baby Blue

Terrace Gate / Baby Blue

Playtime Baby Blue / Gate

Polka Dot Lady / White

Diamond Gate
I had six yards of 1″ piping and about 1/4 yard of each fabric. I cut the fabrics into 2″ strips going the width of the fabric. (I used bigger piping than what was used in the original tutorial.)

Coiling the basket requires lots of hand sewing. I had the best luck with a curved sewing needle (that link was chosen completely at random to demonstrate what I’m talking about).

I used a rotary cutter to create my strips. They definitely don’t have to be perfect. You could even just use scissors and cut an approximate two-inch strip, because once you wrap it around the piping, you’d never notice any unevenness.
