How to make a window seat cushion using a striped fabric!
During this blog, I will demonstrate how to make a window seat cushion using a striped fabric.
SUPPLIES USED:
I used 2 yards of fabric and approximately 8 yards of piping cord.
PROCEDURE:
The first step in creating this window seat cushion was to measure and cut the fabric.
The client needed a window seat cushion with a finished measurement of 45 1/2″ long and 15 3/4″ wide, so I cut the fabric 46 1/2″ by 16 3/4″.
The foam is 2 inches thick so I cut the box sides 3 inches in width.
Usually I cut the fabric that covers the piping bias but since I am working with stripes I wanted to keep them the same direction and the top and bottom panels. As the photo shows I cut across the fabric using 2 inch width to cover the cord.
Once all the fabric has been cut the edge of each piece will need to be serge. This helps keep your fabric from fraying.
The next step is to create all the piping you will need for your project.
When working with stripes try to keep them all lined up. During this step always pin, pin, pin, and pin some more. LOL.
Attach your piping to the face of both the top and bottom panels you cut earlier for your cushion. Use half inch seams.
Next, you will start making your cushion sides which will be known as box sides. Start with the zipper side. As stated before the thickness of the cushion is two inches so to make the zipper side match perfectly I cut a four inch wide piece of fabric the width of the 54″ fabric. Next, fold the fabric in half to make it two inch wide and baste stitch this.
I then cut the fabric length ways creating a three inch piece of fabric with which is baste stitched.
Press the fabric along the baste stitching.
Now pin your zipper in place and stitch it down. Next remove the basting stitch.
The last step is to match up all your side panels and start matching the stripes and stitch them all the way around the top and bottom cushion panels. This will create you boxed sides. Once again, I want to stress pin, pin and pin some more!!
This window seat cushion turned out great!! Just remember to take your time and pin the top and sides together to match your stripes.
Now you know how to make your very own striped cushion.
Happy sewing until next time!
