Let’s Create a Custom Place Mat!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHave you ever looked high and low for just the right color of place mat to match your dining area? In this blog, I will demonstrate how to make your very own custom quilted place mat.

SUPPLIES:

streamersrusset-th For this place-mat you will need approximately 5/8 yards of fabric plus the same amount of quilt bat. I used
Steamers Russet from www.warehousefabricsinc.com

PROCEDURE:

The finished place-mat will measure 14″ long by 18″ wide. First thing I did was cut 2 pieces of fabric to measure 15″ by 19″. This will allow me to use a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Next, cut one piece of quilt bat to measure 14.5 by 18.5 this way you will be able to catch your batting in your outside seams.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAShown in the far left photo is two pieces of fabric with right sides together. And the bottom left photo is of 6 ounce quilt bat cut to suggested size.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANext step is to pen the batting to the fabric with the right sides of the fabric still together. Sew all three pieces together leaving a three inch gap (to turn the fabrics once sewn together).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis photo is a demonstration of turning the fabric right side out once all four sides have been sewn together while leaving the three inch gap.

After you have turned the fabrics right side out and made sure to use your finger tips in the corners to straighten out the fabric, press to flatten.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAt this time, stitch a 3/8 inch stitch around the perimeter of your place-mat.
This will close your gap and finish your place-mat except for the quilting.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERATo begin the quilting, I started making squiggly lines going every direction. I continued doing this until all the place-mat had be covered will lines and curves. Last, I made several straight lines length ways. It turned out with a very pretty quilted look.

Just remember, next time you are needing a place-mat to match your decor, they are fairly simply and quick to make. Give one a try and you will be glad you did. Oh and by the way, the 18 ” by 18″ napkin in the photo was made using the same technique by omitting the quilt bat and quilting step.
