Let’s recover an upholstered bedroom bench!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  A customer brought in a bench that needed to be recovered so I thought this would be a great blog for everyone that has a bench that needs a little TLC! During this blog, I will demonstrate the procedure in recovering your bench.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

You will need approximately 2 and 1/2 yards of fabric (I used Royale Merlot), approximately 8 yards of cord, staples, staple gun and sewing machine.

PROCEDURE:

First remove all fabric and staples from your bench. Then measure and cut your fabric at least 1 inch wider in length and width.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  My customer’s bench measured 18″ x 48″, so I cut my top 19″ x 49″. Next, the depth of the bench seat was 4 1/2″ so I cut my fabric for the side panel in two different strips to save on fabric 9″ x 64″.  The reason I cut the sides 9″ is to allow for stapling to the bottom side of the bench.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Next cut strips of fabric on the bias at least 2″ wide for the cord.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Start the sewing process by covering the cord using the bias fabric and a zipper foot attachment on your sewing machine.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Now on the face side of the fabric for your bench top add the cord. The next step is to sew your side panel together face sides together. Then start adding your sides to the top fabric by pinning in place around the whole perimeter of the bench top.

This is the time where you can either take up your side panels to fit better or let them out.

Once you have the fabric all sewn together and have a good snug fit for your bench it is time to staple the fabric onto the bench.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   Take the fabric and pull tight and staple to make it have a snug fit. Continue to do this around the whole perimeter of the bench seat.

In this photo you can see that there is also a cord added to the bottom of the bench. You will add the cord to the bottom by stapling it directly into the wood around the perimeter of the bench.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA   The bench is finished and looks great!!

Now you know the simple steps it takes to recover your existing bedroom bench!!

Happy Sewing!
