Little jar pincushion (with sewing kit)

025 I’ve been on a bit of a pincushion kick, and I’m not close to being done with it. This one tops a mason jar, so it doubles as storage. You can use them as gift — consider a mini sewing kit. Just put some supplies inside the jar. You can use any size of jar that you please.

I also classified this under “no-sew” projects because you don’t technically have to use gathering stitches — you could just use a glue gun and fold the fabric over — but I find it gives a better result to use gathering stitches.

The process

jar 024

Your jar should come apart into three pieces.

jar 026

Trace your flat lid and cut out a circle for your inner piece. This piece will cover up the messy looking part, so trim just a little bit off all the way around so it’s a bit smaller than this lid.

jar 027

Cut out several layers of batting the shape of the circle and also some fluffy bits of scrap batting.

jar 037

Trace a big circle for your pincushion top. I used a pot lid. I ended up trimming about 1/4″ all the way around.

jar 038

Using a long stitch, baste all the way around the circle. This will form your gathering stitches.

jar 041

Pull your bobbin stitches to gather.

jar 042

Stuff your batting inside.

jar 044

Stick the lid on top of the batting.

jar 055

Stick the padded lid inside of the threaded part. Secure the threads. It should be puffy on the other side.

jar 064

Use the hot glue gun to secure the gathered part to the inside of the lid.

jar 065

Use the glue gun to glue the inside piece over the ugly gathered part.
