Shopping cart cover for baby

Let’s do some math:

Greasy, grimy shopping carts + puny infant immune system + little hands that are in said infant’s mouth all the time = big need for a shopping cart cover.

I looked high and low for a tutorial or pattern, and finally found this one that I liked a lot. It’s really easy to make, and you can pick a cute fabric like these fish. It also covers the cart handle so you don’t have to touch it, either. Add the straps and buckle, and your wee one is clean and safe. I appreciate that the buckle is part of the cover (you attach it to the cart), so that you’re not using the one that a bunch of other babies have put in their mouths or spit up on. I don’t even want to think about all the things those buckles go through.

The toy strap is another nice touch, allowing you to bring a toy but not have it end up on the floor.

Tropical Fish

Minky - red

Webbing

3-point buckle
I used 1.25 yards each of the fabrics. I got the webbing and buckle from Strapworks, as suggested in the tutorial. Beware that the site sells webbing by the foot and not the yard. I didn’t read closely enough and they were not very polite about pointing that out.

The pattern

I found this free tutorial at Sewing Chick Studio. It’s really easy to make.
I loved this fish fabric for a little boy. I paired it with minky instead of fleece, and it worked just fine. If you use a directional print, be very careful when placing your leg holes.
At left, you can see I added a small toy strap, which she suggests in the tutorial. I did not add the pockets. But for the toy strap, I used a length of bias tape leftover from the leg holes. Of course, you must use care that it’s not long enough to get wrapped around baby’s neck or something. They manage to do some crazy things. I simply tucked the ends of the bias tape inward and sewed down the open side. Then I did as she suggested in the tutorial, adding Velcro to form a loop for the toy.
At 4-1/2 months, my son is a bit too small for sitting upright in a shopping cart, but for blog purposes, I made him model.

I can’t wait till he can use it!
