Toddler sewing kit

043Somewhere in the wide world of the web I once saw an idea for a toddler sewing kit. I have a 3-year-old boy who is in the “I do it!” stage and wants to help me do everything, including sewing my projects for this blog. I thought, what if he can sew and also be occupied and out of my hair while I work? YES!

A little kit like this is super easy and cheap to put together. I’m sure you can even come up with your own additions. Leave ideas in the comments, if you have some.

If you’re like me, you can probably find a small basket around the house. Have any leftover skeins of yarn? Maybe a friend does, if you don’t. Grab some plastic needles from the yarn section of a craft store, along with an inexpensive embroidery hoop to hold the fabric taut while little hands sew. Safety scissors allow little kids to cut yarn safely. I also bought a piece of needlepoint plastic with big holes as an alternative to sew on.

As for the fabric (which is where we come in!), some loose-weave burlap will allow a big, fat, dull needle to pass through with ease. We carry a few Murray Burlaps that are great for this purpose.

Just pile it all in a basket and let the kiddo get creative. You may need to help with the threading of the plastic needle and cutting of the yarn, depending on the age of the child.
