LEARN ALL ABOUT CURTAINS & DRAPES
BFS Drapery Workroom tips on curtain fullness and DIY tips on how to measure width and length :)

MEASURE CURTAIN LENGTH:
For drapery header styles than hang directly on your curtain rod such as rod pocket, tab tops, and back tabs, you'll measure from the top of your curtain rod all the way down to where you want your panels to end; and then, especially if using a larger round rod and/or thicker fabric, add back the inches that will be lost when the fabric is shirred onto a rod your size in diameter (rod take-up). That's your perfect desired length. Just a thought of possible pure genius on my part, but don't hold me to it (LOL)?... If you measure using a cloth or flexible tape measure, you can start at the top of your rod and hug the curve as you're measuring and that "should" allow for the rod take up you'd miss if using a straight metal ruler.
For grommet curtains, measure from the top of your curtain rod down to desired end of panel. Do not add extra take-up. That's your perfect length. We'll add the upstand above the grommets in addition to that measurement.

If hanging with drapery rings, measure from the bottom of the ring while installed on your rod (ABOVE the little eyelet - see photo) down to desired panel end.
For curtains that hang with clip rings, measure from the back of the clip teeth (circled part of clip photo) while installed on your rod down to the desired end of panel.

DETERMINE CURTAIN FULLNESS: (non pleated styles)

Flat (no gather)    Casual 1.5x gather    Standard 2x gather    Deluxe 2.5x gather

MEASURE CURTAIN WIDTH: (non pleated styles)
Measure your curtain rod width from left to right. Multiply that measurement x desired fullness (our suggestions are below each header style for your reference). This is the total width of curtain you need to cover your rod if using just 1 panel. Divide that number by 2 if using 2 panels to cover your window and this will give you the width needed for each panel.
*Example: Rod width = 40" from left to right. 40 x 1.5 (if casual fullness) = 60". So you'd need 1 panel @ 60" wide or 2 panels @ 30" wide each to cover your rod in desired fullness.

MEASURE PLEATED CURTAIN WIDTH: (fullness is accounted for in pleats)
Measure your curtain rod width from left to right. This is the MINIMUM total width of curtain you need to cover your rod if using just 1 panel. We highly suggest adding at least 4" to that width to provide some ease (add extra if more ease is desired). Divide that number by 2 if using 2 panels to cover your window and this will give you the width needed for each panel.
*Example: Rod width = 40" from left to right. 40 + 4 (for ease) = 44". So you'd need 1 panel @ 44" wide for a tailored, fitted look or 2 panels @ 22" wide each to cover your rod.

*Example with returns & overlaps: (common when using functional traverse rods vs. decorative rods) Face of rod from left to right = 40". Return on both sides = 3" (this means you'd like to cover the 3" gap from your wall to your rod which will block light from slipping in through the sides). Overlaps = 3" (your panels will overlap each other in the middle so as not to gap and let light peek through). 40 + 4 (for ease) + 6 (returns) + 6 (overlaps) = 56" for 1 panel or 2 panels @ 28" each.

CURTAIN ROD WIDTH x HEIGHT PLACEMENT:
We're constantly asked about rod placement so I wanted to include this here as well... We suggest installing your rod HIGH and WIDE to elongate your walls and make your windows appear larger. Many interior designers are placing rods about 2" below the ceiling and 10" beyond the window frame on each side and we LOVE that dramatic look! Of course, the higher and wider you go, the more fabric and labor required to make your drapes! Soooo.... if you're not concerned about a dramatic presentation of your drapes and just want to decorate your window, we suggest to install your rod a minimum of 3-4" above and beyond the window frame. This is the least amount to give adequate coverage of your window.
