Preschooler’s apron
There are many ways for a toddler to get messy and many ways a miniature apron can come in handy. My preschooler loves to help cook, though he hates to eat. Anything. Ever. This is a very simple apron pattern that is great for even a beginner. It’s reversible (although one side will have the Velcro), so feel free to use different fabrics on each side. Velcro makes putting it on easy for little ones. This apron should easily fit ages 3-5. The little boy pictured is about to turn 4.
Supplies

2″-3″ of Velcro and 2/3 yard of fabric, at most.
The Pattern
Print out the pattern pieces here. Make sure you don’t scale it and it prints full size. Cut off borders and tape together matching the A’s.
Also cut out two straps. One is 3-3/4″x14″ and the other is 3-3/4″x15″.
Cut two pieces of fabric from the apron pattern. This is a half a pattern, so lay it on the fold of your fabric so that it will open up into a whole apron piece. Cut one each of each strap.
The Process
Press under 1/4″ on one end of each strap. Leave the other end as-is.
Press the strap in half lengthwise so raw edges are matching (not shown). Then open it up and press each raw edge to the center line (above).
Press it again in the middle so the raw edges are encased.
Top-stitch all the way around.
Baste the longer strap about 1/2″-3/4″ from the right top edge of one apron piece. (Depends on your seam allowance. I went just under a 1/2″ seam allowance. Maybe about 1/3″.)
Baste other strap to right hand side of the same apron piece around the waist area, as shown above.
With right sides facing, pin the two apron pieces together, making sure the straps are away from the seam allowances.
Stitch all the way around, leaving a hole for turning (I left mine at the bottom).
Clip the corners to reduce bulk.
Turn it right-side out. It will look puffy and sloppy.
Turn in the seam allowance of the hole as you press the whole apron nice and smooth.
Stitch a 1″ piece of Velcro to the end of each strap. Be mindful of how it will meet with the other side of the apron to ensure it’s on the right side of the strap.
Top stitch around the entire apron to give it a finished look and help it stay pretty after washing.
